Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell

General game comments:

“Obviously we started out with a few too many penalties in the beginning – a penalty on the kick return, one on the first series obviously that set us back just bit. But after that, I think things got rolling. I think we played with good energy – Both sides of the ball there early on did a lot of good things.”

“We did some things well – I think we improved in a lot of areas, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do. I think overall we got some good work out of our guys – we were pleased with that, but we’ll look at the film and see where we can get better.”

“I think there are a lot of positives out of this game. Once we got through all of the miscues early on, after that, we got things moving along well.”

On the Colts return game:

“The return game was obviously another bright spot. I think RB Devin Moore did a nice job of finding some seams.”

On Colts DB Bob Sanders:

“Bob [Sanders] got a little playing time. He had a chance to get in there and I thought he moved around well.”

On Colts QB Curtis Painter:

“Curtis Painter certainly had a better evening. I think he played well, threw the ball well and WR Taj Smith made a couple nice catches.”

On giving up big plays:

“We gave up a few too many obviously. A long pass, a long run – those are things that you can’t let happen, but I think our guys bounced back and certainly made a game of it there.”

On playing in Toronto:

“It’s work for us. Certainly it’s a great city – there’s no question about that. And it’s a nice facility, but we don’t have much leisure time.”

On Bills RB C.J. Spiller:

“Spiller is obviously a real fine back. He’s got quick feet, he’s got speed and had a little cut back run – made a couple guys miss on that play and certainly had the after burners to take it the distance.”

On Colts QB Peyton Manning:

“He did a good job. He threw the ball well and completed a couple drives which were key for us.”

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning

On his assessment of the game:

I think we will learn from the film. That is pretty true of every game I would say. Not the way we wanted to start, penalty on the kickoff and penalty on the first play of the game, and that is not what we talked about. That was a quick three and out, scored on the next series. We will see some things that we can build from and find some things that we need to correct.

On his interception:

Any time you are in the preseason you know you are only going to play a certain amount of plays and you would like to score every single time. It is kind of a sense of urgency and a unique situation because you know you are only going to play I think 18-20 plays and that is what it was today. So you want everything to go perfect while you are in there but that is not always the case, so I think you have to have those expectations.

On Colts RB Donald Brown’s running game:

Donald had a couple of nice runs. RB Joe (Addai) had a really nice run on the touchdown and I think that was important. That is your best red zone play right there if you can just hand it off and Joe can go the distance, so that was a good drive and then TE Jacob (Tamme) made a great play on the third down conversion for his touchdown.

On Toronto Argonauts WR Jermaine Copeland:

I saw Jermaine before the game and interviewed with someone in Toronto a few weeks ago about him. I have been really proud of his career here. He was a great teammate for me at Tennessee and I have been really proud of what he has done here in Toronto.

On changes from last season:

There have been some changes, some coaching changes, some players that are not here anymore, and we’ve added some players. There are always going to be some changes from season to season.

On his expectations for the season:

We certainly hope to be. We still have some work to do and that is what preseason is for.  We work all the time to get better. That is what we talk about all of the time during the preseason; just trying to get better.

On the atmosphere of the stadium:

I thought it was good. I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought the fans seemed like they were having a good time.  I don’t know what it compares to when the Bills play here for a regular season. Everyone seemed very nice.
